25 young Palestinians have spent the last 7 months staging a political sit-in at a makeshift refugee camp in Oslo, protesting against the treatment of Palestinian refugees in Norway.
Prior to 2009 Palestinians received protection in Norway in accordance with UNHCR’s guidelines. A change in the Norwegian asylum policy has resulted in a protection rate drop from 100% to 24%. This change however does not reflect a change of the situation in Palestine.
The Refugee Camp protests against the high level of rejected Palestinian asylum cases in Norway and the Norwegian authorities’ assisted and forced deportations to Gaza and the West Bank
During the run-up to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony Mohammad (21) from the refugee camp, who has been in Norway since he was 18, was forcefully deported to the West Bank via Jordan.
Remember the Nobel Peace winners Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres of 1994? 17 years on – Prize but no Peace in Palestine. There is nothing Nobel about breaching the UNHCR’s guidelines by forcefully deporting Palestinian refugees.
